Longitudinal surveys are useful for studying
the dynamics of a topic or issue over time. However, samples tend to shrink
over time (“mortality”), keeping track of subjects over time can be
difficult, as can maintaining their interest in and willingness to
participate in the study. Thus, longitudinal surveys require an extended
commitment on the part of the researcher, subjects, and all others involved.
