Exercise #2:
FRAMING A COMPREHENSIVE
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Having organized their thoughts about teacher growth and development by writing the "learning to teach" biography in Exercise #1, students will read and discuss literature concerning professional development. These materials provide the intellectual challenge that expands students' thoughts beyond the biography by identifying the foundational concepts for thinking about a long-term staff development program.

Based upon one's reflections about the biography as well as the literature considered in class, each student will:

  • Synthesize a working definition of "professional development": Based upon the ideas generated through the student’s experience and study, how should professional development be defined? [This working definition will be no longer than four pages.]

Each student will present Exercise #2 in class for review, critique, and feedback. In addition, a hard copy will be provided to the professor for grading. In light of the feedback received, the student will revise Exercise #2 and place it in the second division of the portfolio.
